BOOZERS at Friday's Mini Twelfth parade in Cloughfern and Whiteabbey were left empty handed as police seized hundreds of items of drink.
Officers confiscated more than 200 bottles and cans as part of a wider proactive campaign to stamp out the illegal use of alcohol at public events.

The PSNI has confirmed one man was arrested during the event. He has since been released pending reports.

But the parade, organised by LOL No 24 Cloughfern District, passed off peacefully as supporters lined the streets to watch the 240-strong marchers and bandsmen take part in the event.

There was a heavy police presence on Glenville Road, and the Doagh Road was closed for a time as the parade got under way.

Four bands took part in the event which set off from Cloughfern Orange Hall via Monkstown Avenue, Glenville Road, Shore Road, Old Station Road, Ypres Park, Fernagh Road and back along the Doagh Road to Cloughfern.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Friday's parade passed off peacefully. This was as a result of communities coming together and finding local accommodations to local issues and the policing operation reflected this goodwill.

“As part of a wider strategy to tackle the issue of misuse of alcohol in society and at public events, the Police Service of Northern Ireland took a proactive approach to on street drinking at the parade. Police seized more than 200 items of drink.”

For operational reasons, the PSNI was unable to confirm how many police officers were on duty for the parade. However, it said its response was “appropriate and proportionate to the circumstances”.
