POLICE are distributing posters reminding local people to secure their property and prevent 'creeper burglaries' taking place.
Creeper burglaries are those which are carried out when someone enters premises when the occupants are in bed. In many instances car keys have been left accessible so the vehicle is subsequently stolen.

nnery, explained: "Statistics show that up to 50% of burglaries are caused by leaving doors and windows open. Burglaries can be prevented. It is essential that people take some simple preventative measures to minimise the risks of falling victim to this type of crime.
• Always lock your doors and windows at night.
• Fit good quality doors, windows and locks.
• Ensure valuables such as car keys are kept out of sight and reach.
• When going to bed, set your alarm for the lower floor or entry zones if you can.
• Park your car in your garage.
• If your car is parked outside your house fit a sensor light or park it under a street lamp.
The Inspector added: "During the summer months people are more likely to have windows and patio doors open. It is essential that before householders leave their home or go to bed that they ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secure. It is also important to ensure valuables such as car keys are not kept on visible surfaces such as window ledges or hall tables. Similarly, if possible park your vehicle in a garage to deter thieves.
"Some simple steps can prevent opportunist thieves getting hold of your property. Police will continue to target these criminals, but we need the help of members of the public to make it as difficult as possible for them to gain access to premises and property."
