A CHINESE man whose Rathcoole home was targeted in a sinister paint bomb attack says he is "devastated" by the incident.
The victim, who did not want to be named, said the weekend attack had also been "frightening and difficult" for his wife and his children.
"The community I live in is a good community but there are some young people who are determined to complicate our lives and that is very sad," the man said.
"My wife and children have been frightened by this experience and it angers me that the people who are carrying this out do not seem to understand the damage they do to their community."
No one was injured in Sunday evening's attack (June 29). Police have confirmed they are treating the incident as racist and are appealing for information.
According to Mukesh Sharma, Chairman of the Good Relations Partnership, the incident is just one of a number of racist attacks on people and property in Newtownabbey.
"Many of the attacks are blatant hate crimes, victimising vulnerable individuals and families and are mostly racist or sectarian in nature," he said.
"The Good Relations Partnership in Newtownabbey strongly condemns these attacks. This is totally unacceptable behaviour and has a detrimental effect on victims and the borough as a whole. It is essential that communities unite and work to put a stop to this insanity."
Councillor Nigel Hamilton visited the family earlier this week. He claims young people were behind the paint bombing.
"This attack was serious and unacceptable," he said. "This family have been victims of the worst form of ignorance and prejudice. Thank goodness no one was injured, but this should be a wake-up call to our community to come forward with information which would lead to these youths being apprehended."
He added: "I very much hope they will receive the support from their community in Rathcoole. It saddens me that some young people cannot see that they are not only damaging their community, but in victimising this family and others, they are demonstrating a prejudice and an ignorance."
Police Area Commander, Chief Inspector Paula Hilman, said: "Without doubt this was very traumatic for this victim and I know that the vast majority of the community in Newtownabbey will join me in condemning this. Please assist the police in this matter by giving us any information, no matter how small, in order to solve this crime and bring those responsible before the courts."
Chief Inspector Hilman added: "Hate Crime is unacceptable, no one deserves to experience it and no one deserves to get away with it. To stop it, report it."
