VANDALS URGED TO STOP TARGETING COMMUNITY FACILITY

VANDALS who daubed sectarian slogans on the walls of a cross-community facility in Glengormley have been urged to return to the scene of their crime.
Kathy Wolff of the Community Relations Forum has appealed to those behind the latest attack at the Barron Hall to come and see for themselves the valuable work being carried out at the Antrim Road building.

On Friday vandals painted IRA and KAH (Kill All Huns) on the walls and front door of the property - the second time the building has been targeted in less than four weeks.

Just last month the hall, which is used by the Community Relations Forum, Citizens Advice Bureau, Senior Citizens Forum and several other groups, was sprayed with sectarian slogans just hours before a Healing Through Remembering event. And last week an oil tank at the rear of the property was vandalised and the roof damaged by youths throwing stones.

Kathy Wolff stressed that the Barron Hall is used by all sections of the community, including recently the Orange Order, Ancient Order of Hibernians and DUP, Sinn Fein and Alliance Party politicians.

“This is a shared space that is open to everyone regardless of race, religion or anything else. It is a shame that some people can’t see that and keep targeting us in this way.

“It’s very frustrating that this keeps on happening as we don’t want to turn the place into some sort of fortress, but we simply can’t afford to keep paying out to repair vandalism.

“We want to be spending the funds we raise on classes and projects for the local community, but we’re having to spend our money on repairing damage caused by vandals.

“I would invite the people who are doing this to come to the hall - our door is open - and to see for themselves the work we are doing here and that this hall is used by all sections of the community,” she said.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed that enquiries into the graffiti attack are continuing.

Meanwhile, two juveniles were arrested following a separate incident at the hall on July 12.

Rubbish had been set alight at the property and fire fighters attending the scene were stoned by a number of youths.

Both juveniles were released on police bail.
