FIRE crews were targeted in a worrying attack in a local housing estate at the weekend.
The incident happened in the Bawnmore area on Friday night (May 9).
Glengormley-based firefighters were called to the area at around 7.20pm after receiving a report of a skip on fire. It was then that they came under attack from a group of youths.
There were no injuries and no damage to vehicles, the fire service said.
"This was an isolated incident in Bawnmore," said Watch Commander Terry Megarry. "When we approached the skip a glass bottle was thrown at the appliance but it fell short."
Mr Megarry confirmed there were youths drinking in the area.
The crews were later called back to the area after assurances were given to them by a local community worker, and the firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The incident was one of five attacks in Northern Ireland on Friday. There was stone throwing in Londonderry and firefighters were also targeted on the Woodstock Road in east Belfast. Further attacks took place in the Falls Road and Dixon Park playing fields in Belfast.
Newtownabbey's Mayor Nigel Hamilton said the attack in Bawnmore had put lives in danger.
"I roundly condemn any such behaviour and would encourage and support the activity of the community workers to try and bring an end for once and for all to this crazy behaviour," he said.
"When lives are at risk, the emergency services need to be supported and allowed to carry out the excellent work they do in our community.
"Anyone identified in any such attack deserves only the full rigours of the law. No-one, when carrying out their duty and serving our community, in dangerous circumstances, as our fire service do, deserves to be attacked or hindered as they carry out this important work."
Health Minister Michael McGimpsey also said such attacks were absolutely unacceptable.
"By attacking fire crews, there is a very real risk that a firefighter will be injured or equipment may be damaged, resulting in a fire engine not being available for a real emergency. These attacks are cowardly and criminal, and have no place in a civilised society."
