FAMILY and friends of a Ballyclare man are mourning his tragic death in a road accident in Ballymena on Monday morning (March 5).

Eric Weir was killed when the vehicle he was driving left the Craigadoo Road near Moorefields, just after 8am.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident which killed the father-of-three.

His funeral service is due to be held today, Thursday, March 8, in Kilbride Parish Church.

Mr Weir, who was known as ‘Persil’ around the town, was a founder member of the Ballyclare Protestant Boys Flute Band and a keen flautist.

As a mark of respect the band cancelled Monday night’s practice.

A representative from the band stated that the 49-year-old was “an inspiring man”.

He said: “He was a great man who loved the band, his football, and was just great craic.

“He was a brilliant man - an inspiring man. Even after he retired from the band he was still very keen on what all we were doing and would walk alongside us on our parades.”
