A MONKSTOWN musician has been named Young Guitarist of the Year at the Ards International Guitar Festival.

Anselm McDonnell said he was thrilled to win the title at the festival, which features some of the best jazz, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass and classical guitar artists.

The 17-year-old’s father, Vincent, spotted the competition and persuaded Anselm to apply.

He sent a recording into the competition organisers and was shortlisted for the final with three others.

Anselm chose threes songs, a Joe Satriani piece and two acoustic numbers by Preston Reed and Andy McKee which won the judges over.

“The three others in the competition were incredible. I thought the guy on before me had won it, he was that good,” Anselm told the Times.
