THE COUNCIL has applied to central government for the extra cost incurred to it over the course of the heavy snowfall in March.
The Department for Regional Development has agreed to pay Newtownabbey Borough Council a service fee of £1,424 per year to help with the removal of ice and snow during bouts of bad weather.
Councillors queried the fee and if it would cover extreme weather, such as that which hit the borough in recent weeks, at the recent Policy and Governance meeting.
Council chief executive Jacqui Dixon said there was a compensation scheme in place for councils to recover exceptional costs in the event of extreme conditions.
She said the council was assessing the excess costs incurred during March and an application for compensation would be made.
