Morgan quits blues for reds
Niall Morgan is quitting his blossoming soccer career with Dungannon Swifts to throw his weight behind Tyrone’s bid for more all-Ireland glory!
The man who has been receiving rave reviews for his performances against the best forwards in the Irish League plays outfield for his GAA club, but is now set on making a determined bid for the Red Hands’ number one jersey!
“To leave Dungannon Swifts has been my most difficult decision to make, but you only get one chance to play for your county and I know that if I was to turn it down at this stage I wouldn’t get another” says Morgan.
“I am still contracted with Swifts and, if I ever come back to soccer, I would only ever come back to Dungannon Swifts.
“I will be here until January and I hope that Dungannon can get a keeper that will help keep them in the league.
“I don’t do nets for my club so I suppose it has been my performances for Swifts that has brought me to the attention of Tyrone. “It’s a new challenge and I am relishing it. I want to make the team not just the panel” he added.
Swifts manager Darren Murphy is disappointed to lose one of the club’s greatest assets, but understands Morgan’s position and deserves commendation for his attitude, as he revealed after Saturday’s crucial 3-0 home win over Donegal Celtic.
“I wish Niall the best. I am a sports person first and foremost and I know Niall has dreams and ambitions” said the Portadown man.
“He said to me at the meeting during the week that he is a young Catholic from Tyrone and wants to play for his county at the highest level - and I can appreciate that because I was a young protestant from Corcraine and I wanted to play for Linfield.
“He goes with my best wishes and I have to say that, if he performs as well for Tyrone as he did for us in this game, I think Pascal McConnell will have a difficult job on his hands keeping the goalkeeping jersey for Tyrone.
“Niall remains in contract and if things don’t work out for him, he will be welcomed back to Dungannon Swifts” added Murphy.
