CALLS have been made for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) to tackle a problem dumping area in Mallusk to prevent possible flooding.

Alliance Councillor for Antrim Line John Blair has asked the NIEA for an immediate update regarding the ongoing dumping of earth at a site on the Michelin Road. He said: “looking at this site, I was shocked at the amount of earth and debris which has been brought there.

“Newtownabbey council environmental health officers had already investigated and were able to inform me that the matter was in the hands of NIEA environmental crime unit.

“I remain very concerned that storm drains could be blocked by the works that have taken place and I am worried that there could be an impact on nearby rivers and streams.

“I have spoken to the (DoE)crime unit, outlining my concerns, and they have assured me that they will update me on progress.” An NIEA spokesman said: “We can confirm that a company in this area is currently the subject of an enforcement case.”
