NORTH Belfast MP Nigel Dodds has given his support to Age Sector Platform’s ‘Silver Saver’ campaign calling on food retailers to introduce a discount day for pensioners.
In a statement, Mr Dodds said: “I fully support the ‘Silver Saver’ campaign. It has been shown that older people spend a higher proportion of their income on food than any other age group.
“The state pension has failed to keep pace with the increase in food prices over recent years, meaning that affording the weekly shop is a constant worry for many older people. This campaign calls on food retailers to introduce a discount day for pensioners to ensure that they can afford to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.”
The campaign has also been backed by several of Mr Dodds’ party colleagues including local MLAs Paula Bradley, Trevor Clarke and Pam Brown.
Nixon Armstrong, from Age Sector Platform, added: “At present, one in five pensioners in Northern Ireland is living in poverty. Rising food prices will push even more older people towards this hardship line. This means older people are finding it harder to keep up with hikes in food prices, and why we are calling on food retailers to introduce a pensioner discount day.”
The campaign allows people to show their support by signing a petition online at wwww.silversaver.org.uk.
Alternatively, supporters can collect petition postcards from Mr Dodds’s constituency office at 39 Shore Road or telephone Age Sector Platform on 028 9031 2089 to request a batch.
