Cemetery to host Somme service

NEWTOWNABBEY Borough Council has approved the use of Carnmoney Cemetery for a Battle of the Somme memorial service and wreath laying ceremony next summer.

Elected representatives this week agreed to a request from Phil Hamilton of Rathcoole Friends of the Somme to be allowed to hold the service at the Cross of Sacrifice in the Main Cemetery on Sunday, June 23.

In his letter to the council, Mr Hamilton said that a short parade will take place from Rathcoole to the cemetery on the morning of the event.

Councillors were informed that the service will commemorate the start of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and remember the fallen of the First World War.
