EDMUND Rice College Student Council has made a donation to north Belfast suicide prevention charity, the Pips Programme, following a visit by Philip McTaggart from the organisation.

Mr McTaggart was invited to the school to talk about the programme’s suicide awareness work in the area.

Pips was established in 2003 following the suicides of 13 young people under the age of 18 in the north Belfast area.

Mr McTaggart, who lost his own son to suicide, established the group as a support and educational network for other young people who may be suffering from suicide-related illnesses.

Student Council co-ordinator at Edmund Rice, Paul Berne, expressed his gratitude for Mr McTaggart to the school.

“We were delighted to have Philip visit our school and to speak to our boys about some of the work he and other Pips workers engage in throughout the north Belfast community,” he said.

“We were delighted to make a small donation to the Pips organisation and we will do whatever we can to support this essential project in the future.”

Mr McTaggart was presented with a donation of £200 on behalf of the Student Council.
