WORK on a £200,000 play park in Ballyclare is going ahead as scheduled, despite complaints from local residents about the location of the new facility.

People living on Avondale Drive, just a matter of metres from the site in Sixmilewater Park, this week hit out at Newtownabbey Council and the Planning Service for failing to consult with them before work started on the project last month.

And while the council claims it proposed the location during an extensive consultation exercise carried out in 2009, a blunder by Planning Service meant notification letters identifying the chosen site were never received by people living just yards away.

Jony Mitchell, who lives directly opposite the construction site, said he welcomes a new play park for the area, but stressed that there are better locations within the Sixmile Park where the facility could’ve been built.
