NEWTOWNABBEY Council is considering building a crematorium on land at Ballyearl, it has been confirmed.
With cemetery space in the borough running out and the cost of cremation at Roselawn increasing, the council is working alongside Belfast City Council on a feasibility study concerning the possibility of building a new crematorium beside the council’s Central Services Depot on the Doagh Road.
The proposal is likely to spark serious concern among local householders who live close to the site opposite Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre, but the council has stressed that no decisions have yet been taken on what is expected to be a long-term project.
“The council’s draft corporate plan identifies future burial provision as a priority and the council has agreed in principle to explore the potential to provide a crematorium in the borough,” an NBC spokesperson explained.
“As this is a long-term project for the council there will be extensive and ongoing consultation with local residents and other interested parties as the proposal progresses.”
