Commenting on the incident, Constable Prentice said: “On Tuesday, March 28, two males called to the door of an 82-year-old lady living on the Carnhill Road.

“They carried out some power washing at her address before charging her £750 for the minor works carried out. The males had arrived in a dark blue coloured Ford Transit van with an English style registration plate.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the van, or who may have dash cam footage of the Carnhill Road on March 28, to get in touch by calling the non-emergency number 101.”

Constable Prentice added: “I would also urge the public in the greater Newtownabbey area to be vigilant. If you see door-to-door traders at an elderly or vulnerable neighbours home, please intervene.

“If you feel like someone is pressuring you for excessive amounts of money for a small service carried out, then ring the police immediately.

“If you have a neighbour or relative who you feel may fall foul of such activities, call into Newtownabbey station and pick up a Nominated Neighbour pack.”
