NEWTOWNABBEY councillors have claimed that planning approval for a Domino’s Pizza outlet in Ballyclare will bring about the closure of a local business with the loss of six jobs.

At Monday night’s Planning Committee meeting, councillor Jim Bingham said he was disappointed that the Planning Service was approving the proposal from the pizza chain for an outlet at The Square.

He said: “I am very disappointed that this has been approved. There is another pizza business in the town that will probably close because it will be unable to compete with this major chain and with it there will be the loss of six jobs.”

Alderman Paul Girvan also expressed his concern that the approval of the plans would lead to job losses.

He said: “The town centre should be an area of mixed use. Ballyclare is losing its retail heart and we already have a lot of catering businesses in the town.

“It may not be within the remit of the Planning Service to refuse this application now, but there needs to be a review of the policy so that this cannot happen.”

The area planning officer, John Davison, said they could not refuse an application based on how it might affect businesses in the area.
