A GLENGORMLEY bakery has been “forced out” of business because of a drastic decline in the number of customers passing through the town centre.

And the owners have said that long-awaited infrastructure improvements to Glengormley have come “too late” to help their business.

The shutters came down for the final time at Sandra’s Home Bakery on Friday, December 2.

Owner Sandra Burns said since the new Henderson retail development at Glenwell and Northcott Shopping Centre opened, customer numbers had dropped, forcing her to close the business.

She said that in the first two days since the new Tesco opened at Northcott last week, takings had dropped by hundreds of pounds.

“I’m happy about the decision, its just a total relief,” said Sandra.

Sandra has operated her own business for the past six years and opened the home bakery at the corner of Portland Avenue in 2007; prior to that she worked in auxiliary nursing.

She and her husband Ed have said they are not sure what they will do next but will “find something”.

Sandra added: “If it’s for you it will not pass you by and I will find something, but I am just relieved that I will not have to worry about the business any longer.”
