Former principal appointed college governor

THE former principal of Doagh Primary School, Mr Bobby Thompson, has been appointed to the Governing Body of Stranmillis University College in Belfast.

Mr Thompson (right) was one of three new governors appointed recently by the Minister for Employment and Learning, Dr Stephen Farry.

The appointments took effect from March 29 for a period of four years.

The Governing Body is responsible for overseeing the college’s activities, achievement of its mission, compliance with its framework of governance and the Financial Memorandum under which funding is received from the Department for Employment and Learning.

Mr Thompson, a former student of Stranmillis, served the last 32 years of his professional career as principal of Doagh Primary. He is chairman of a local primary school and governor of two large post-primary schools. He has also been a member of the North Eastern Education & Library Board.

Mr Thompson, who was also recently appointed to the Council for the Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), will bring an understanding of strategic planning to the Governing Body.
