THE manager of a cafe on the Doagh Road at Ballyearl has voiced frustration at ongoing roadworks close to the business which are taking almost double the time to complete than had initially been mooted.

Improvements to the junction of the Carntall Road and Carnmoney Road North began on September 5 and were due to last 12 weeks.

However, this weekend (Jan 21 - 22) and next weekend (Jan 28 - 29) the junction will be closed and diversions will be in place to accommodate resurfacing work.

The Roads Service has said the improvements to the junction should be “substantially completed” by the end of the month - almost 22 weeks since work first began.

The manager at the local cafe said she was “incredibly frustrated” with the work and the length of time it was taking.

She said: “With the temporary traffic lights in place, cars coming through cannot get to our business because of the queue of cars waiting at the other side.

“Since the roadworks started, there is no doubt, our business has been hit hard.

“And if they close the junction over the next two weekends then we will see a complete drop in trade.”

A spokeswoman for the Roads Service said the prolonged scheme was the result of unexpected work which required the replacement of a culvert under the road, and apologised for the inconvenience.
