FOUR local lads are taking part in a charity old banger rally to help raise funds for both the Northern Ireland Hospice and the Children’s Hospice.
And a charity auction to raise funds is being held in the Cottonmount Arms in Mallusk this Saturday, February 25.
Ivan Kennedy, Billy Wilson, Roger Lappin and Gavin Grey will be driving in the 4,000 mile Benidorm or Bust Old Banger Rally in an old BMW car they have custom designed for the adventure.
The car, which is over 15 years old, was bought for £400 and all associated costs with fuel and maintenance have been met by the four men and various local businesses who have helped them out. All monies raised will go straight to the two very deserving charities.
The men have designed the car along a Titanic theme to mark the upcoming centenary celebrations for the stricken liner.
They will set off on March 14 to meet up with thousands of others at Dover Port who are taking part in the massive rally which will see them travel through France and Spain before returning home again through Ireland.
Ivan told the Times: “It was something we had always thought about doing and we just decided to go for it and there is no better cause than both the Hospice and the Children’s Hospice.
“We originally set out to raise about £2,000 and at the minute it is looking like we will be raising a lot more than that, which we are delighted with.
“The car should make it, we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed, but if anything it will be an adventure.”
Tickets for a Manchester United game and Northern Ireland’s fixture with Norway will be among the many fabulous prizes on offer at Saturday’s charity auction which is due to kick off at 8pm.
