NEWTOWNABBEY Borough Council has approved the use of the Valley Park for next year’s East Antrim Combine Twelfth of July demonstration, which will be hosted by Carnmoney District LOL No. 25 in Glengormley.
At their monthly meeting on Monday evening (July 9), members agreed that Carnmoney District should be granted access to the park on July 11 and 12, 2013. They also agreed that the former landfill site on the opposite side of O’Neill Road be used for car parking during next year’s event.
Sinn Fein councillor Gerry O’Reilly claimed that the lodge’s request meant the park would be closed to local people for two days. However, he was assured by Chief Executive Jacqui Dixon that the facilities, including the play park, will remain open on July 11.
UUP man John Scott stressed that members of Carnmoney District only need access to the park on July 11 in order to set up stalls and stages. And he said that the park will be “open to everyone” during the Twelfth celebrations.
DUP councillor Thomas Hogg stressed that next year’s Twelfth demonstration will bring large crowds into Glengormley, providing a welcome boost to local businesses.
