Over the past eight years, the Mallusk-based Henderson Group has supported school sports days across Northern Ireland to the tune of £140,000.

Kits, bibs, banners, finishing tape and medals have been handed out to almost a quarter of a million children free of charge by the retailer’s stores.

Brenda Mulligan, from the Henderson Group said: “We are incredibly proud of this initiative. The number of children who have benefited is quite overwhelming.

“This adds and confirms that little extra care that communities have come to expect from our family-run community stores.”

The Spar is also offering children the chance to meet an Olympic hero from the London Games, which kick off later this month.

Brenda continued: “There are five ‘Win a Master Class with a GB Athlete’ to be won across the whole UK. We have some inspiring athletic talent here in Northern Ireland and we’re delighted to have them on board for this competition.”
