The talent on display at the 2012 Mossgrove Youth Musical Festival which ran from January 31 to February 4 was, as ever, outstanding.

The contest was adjudicated professionally yet sympathetically by the Federation of Festivals’ adjudicator, Donal McCrisken.

And the Festival’s top prize, the Praemium Excellentia Award, went to Eva Richards for her playing of the First Movement of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Eva, a pupil of Ballymena Academy, was judged as showing a “mature understanding of the music which was played with flair and emotion”.

The Gala Evening held on Saturday, February 4 at the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl, was the culmination of three days of intense competition and the top prizes were as follows: The Glover Shield for the Junior Vocal Champion - Sarah Minford; The John Conway Memorial Cup for the Overall Piano Champion - Sheya Chan; Tutti L’Instrumente Cup for the Instrumental Champion - Eva Richards; The Ruth Reilly Memorial Trophy for the Choral Champion - Mossgrove Primary School; The Bel Canto Trophy for the Senior Vocal Champion - Conor Madden; The Whiteabbey Cup for the most Promising Competitor 15 and Under - Sheya Chan
