Kids in Newtownabbey have been given the opportunity to be part of an exciting new programme in a bid to enhance both their academic and sporting abilities.
The ‘hockey and homework club’ has been giving pupils from Ashgrove Primary School a chance to receive expert tuition and help with their homework before going on to enjoy hockey coaching sessions.
The club, which is running every Wednesday until the end of November, has been launched as a new initiative from Newtownabbey Borough Council working in partnership with Newtownabbey PSNI, Mossley and Ulster hockey clubs and Active Communities.
Aimed at helping children develop skills in both academic and sporting areas, the club also includes educational lessons from the Newtownabbey PSNI who provide information on everything from general safety specific issues like fireworks.
As the club is held at Mossley Hockey Club, the children also get to avail of the fantastic facilities whilst receiving coaching from Ulster and Mossley Hockey coaches as well as Harry McNeill from Active Communities.
Dean Holmes, Sport and Play development officer, says: “This is a fantastic programme and hopefully we will be able to sustain it past this initial period.
“Hopefully the children will benefit from taking part in such a well-rounded educational and sports programme.”
