LOCAL landscape gardener, Ian Price is urgently looking for suppliers and sponsors to help him create a very special show garden for the Garden Show Ireland, which will be held in Hillsborough in May.
Ian, from Parkgate, is working with local charity Aware Defeat Depression to create his vision, titled ‘One for the Journey’ which gives a visual representation of his experience of depression.
Ian, who grew up in Woodford and attended Ballyclare High School, has battled depression for several years and is refreshingly open about his struggle. He has planned his garden meticulously to ensure that someone with no knowledge of depression can experience the depths of despair and the altered perceptions of reality it brings, right through to the openness, light and hope that recovery delivers.
“I have been ill with bouts of depression for many years and Aware have been a huge help to me and my family. They’ve supported me through some of the worst times of my life and my ambition is to give something back by building this garden to raise awareness of their work,” Ian explained.
“Time is ticking on though and I’m cutting it fine to have all the materials I need ready in time to build the garden. I am very grateful to Eglantine Timber who are currently the main sponsor, but with so many materials left to source I still need help from builders, building suppliers and garden centres.”
Ian still needs help sourcing items for his garden, including building products, plants, metal structures such as gabions and pond equipment. He is appealing to anyone who can help with donations or supplies to get in touch and make his dream garden become a reality.
A full list of the equipment and materials required is available on the Aware Defeat Depression website. All donors and sponsors will be allowed to display their names and logos within Ian’s garden at the show, which is expected to have close to 30,000 visitors. The charity will also feature them on their website.
