New Mossley bonfire is a work in progress
NEW Mossley Community Group would like to respond to the article in last week's paper regarding the current situation at the bonfire site in the estate.
As community activists we work tirelessly throughout the year dealing with all sorts of issues. Earlier this year the group met with the bonfire organisers, the Council, NIHE, PSNI, as well as political representatives and other community workers to try and establish a code of rules regarding the bonfire and dumping.
Unfortunately, all parties were unable to reach an agreement on the bonfire protocol. While it may have been unsuccessful this year, we would hope by next year any issues will have been ironed out and an agreed protocol will have been set up.
It is of great importance however, for people to understand that many of the residents are in favour of the bonfire. It is a traditional part of the cultural heritage of the area, that has been ongoing for decades.
To say the bonfire collectors do not give a toss as to the concerns of residents is untrue. The work these individuals put into building this bonfire is ongoing on a daily basis.
They take steps to ensure it is built with safety in mind and is inspected regularly. The whole aim of the bonfire is for the residents to come along with their families and enjoy the 11th Night celebrations in a peaceful way as has been the case every year.
We feel both our own and this new generation need more education about the hazards of burning tyres, etc…
We as a group would be happy to run a course at the community house relating to environmental issues and raising awareness of how it may affect the health of our local residents.
However, this would need funding and that would have to come via our local politicians.
Finally, we would like the public to understand whilst we do not have control over the bonfire, we continue to try and resolve matters related to it in as positive a way as possible.
Jack Shaw, Chairman, New Mossley Community Group.
