No dancing allowed at Memorial Hall

I WOULD just like to point out that the Apprentice Boys' Memorial Hall at Mossley was never used as a 'Dance Hall' (Newtownabbey Times, March 12).

In fact when the ground was sold to the Apprentice Boys the owner categorically stated that a dance was never to be held in it.

It was used for most everything else back in the 1950s - concerts, films, and parties. It was also used for church services and Sunday School - the Superintendant's name was Alex McIlwaine.

Edwin Heath, the hypnotist, used it on several occasions and in most of the above it was a packed hall nearly every night and even though the music was good a lot of people were tempted to dance but no one ever did out of respect for the conditions of purchase.

I hope the hall brings people back together in Mossley, both young and not so young.

Lillian Byers.
