'Once set on fire tyres become lethal to all'
I WAS horrified at the sheer quantity of tyres depicted at New Mossley in your last edition. Surely the parents of those responsible must take tough action?
Many local men worked at the tyre factory formerly at Mallusk. They must be aware of the toxic mix of chemicals, including carcinogens, locked up in those tyres.
Inside the tyres, they are perfectly safe. However, once set on fire they become lethal to all over a wide area from the bonfire once released in fumes and smoke.
The little children, old folk and everyone else in the area are exposed to critical illness. In many cases this will not become apparent for some considerable time later.
The local community volunteers have done a great and difficult job in their attempts to remedy this atrocity. It must be followed up by other areas such as Rathcoole and Rathfern, however. Families and neighbours lives' and health is not negotiable.
Finally, why are local councillors, health officials and the police doing nothing about the local tyre distribution firms? They have a statutory duty to safely dispose of these tyres. In avoiding payment of disposal charges and taking irresponsible action via the bonfire route is totally reprehensible.
It would be relatively easy to devise an inspection system which would ensure used tyres go from the industry to the correct disposal point.
