Reader sets out stall over May Fair turnout

I have just read the comments on Newtownabbey Borough Council's website regarding this year's May Fair. I believe that they have clearly got it wrong when they write that Ballyclare will be a "hive of activity" from Saturday, May 16 to Saturday, May 23.

I certainly didn't see a "hive of activity" on Saturday, May 16.

I went to support my local community on Saturday and was shocked to find that there were no stalls around the town hall on Saturday, May 16. From talking to others in the town on Saturday they explained to me that the stalls were not allowed on the so called "new" pavement. Well, what's the point of having something if folk can't use it?! Even on May Fair Day (Tuesday, May 19), the stalls have to be set up on the main road which is absolutely ridiculous.

If the fair had been set up the way it has been over the many years that we have celebrated the May Fair, then I believe that there would have been a better turnout to watch the parade on Saturday.

The market stalls make the fair what it is, and if the stalls had been positioned around the town hall on Saturday then I believe that more people would have been about to watch the opening parade.

The children of Ballyclare have put an awful lot of effort into the parade and I'm sure they were disappointed to see so few people cheering them on. Remember - Children are our future!!!

I feel that Newtownabbey Borough Council have spoilt the atmosphere of Ballyclare May Fair.

As a ratepayer of Ballyclare I believe I have a right to voice my opinion.

Disgruntled Ballyclare resident.
