'Warden support for PSNI should be welcomed'

I wish to comment on the decision of the council's Development Committee not to consider the role of street wardens in tackling anti-social behaviour in the borough (Newtownabbey Times, February 19).

Councillors are already utilising NIHE neighbourhood wardens who have worked in housing estates since 2002, dealing with anti-social behaviour and dealing with difficult situations on a regular basis. They have no additional powers, are unarmed and are lone workers and the councillors have no great difficulty in dealing with these wardens, utilising and involving them in dealing with anti-social cases across Newtownabbey.

In Belfast city there are street wardens, neighbourhood wardens and roaming wardens and park rangers who all complement and assist the work of the PSNI and have done so over the past three years with no great difficulty. Indeed, at present they are trialling headcams to record incidents. Why should Newtownabbey be any different and not use a similar approach?

As a ratepayer who sees anti-social behaviour on a regular basis and sees a deficit in PSNI resources on the ground, any additional support for the PSNI should be welcomed, not shunned. Come on Newtownabbey councillors, a more proactive approach would benefit all the citizens of the borough.

We are playing catch up with the rest of the UK and are unwilling to use resources which are seen to be working across the UK, but not good for Newtownabbey.

Government with the people, for the people.

Concerned Ratepayer, Carnmoney (via email)
