A NEW sculpture to commemorate the historic achievements of Newtownabbey’s celebrated aviator Lilian Bland will be officially unveiled in Glengormley Park on Wednesday, August 24.

The popular park will also see a name change from Glengormley Park to ‘Lilian Bland Community Park’ on the same date.

The metal Mayfly sculpture in the park, which depicts Lilian Bland’s biplane ‘The Mayfly’ which took flight from Carnmoney Hill in 1910, has been designed to be a lasting legacy to her amazing achievement in becoming the first woman in the world to design, build and fly her own plane.

The £24,000 artwork was due to be oifficially unveiled earlier this summer, but the ceremony was forced to be put on hold after vandals targeted the feature, spraying it with graffiti.
