Local councillors have voted to accept a Public Health Agency grant of almost £6,000 for outdoor gym equipment to be placed in Ballyclare’s Sixmilewater Park.

The £5,993 will fund three to four pieces of equipment, which park users will be able to use free of charge and which will encourage the uptake of physical activity. The items will be placed in an area of low anti-social behaviour and will enhance equipment installed at Sixmilewater Park last year.

The grant for gym equipment at Sixmile Park follows a previous successful funding bid for almost £20,000 made to the Public Health Agency for ten pieces of gym equipment for Jordanstown’s Loughshore Park. The £19,963 grant will fund equipment to be placed at the Greenisland end of the park to promote usage of this area, widening the range of facilities on offer across the site.

Further funding bids are to be made to allow outdoor gym equipment to be purchased and situated in other key areas, including Glengormley’s Lilian Bland Park, in 2014-15.
