More than 50 female representatives from the council and the community attended a special event at Mossley Mill on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day.

The guest speaker on the evening was Victims and Survivors Commissioner for Northern Ireland, Kathryn Stone OBE.

Kathryn spoke on this year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Inspiring Change’ and provided a moving and insightful speech about her own personal goals, her background in health and social care and how she balances her commitment to both family and professional life.

Deputy Mayor Dineen Walker, who hosted the event, commented: “Each year, International Women’s Day marks the celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. It is a time to reflect on the contributions made by women and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in local communities.

“There are many things to celebrate on International Women’s Day: the equal opportunities and rights those women before us have fought for, advances in health and reproductive care, how far we’ve come in business and leadership, the changes to workplace cultures and structures that are opening more opportunities for women and the ‘firsts’ women continue to initiate.”

International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide, with thousands of events taking place each year across many countries and cities. There are a range of local events taking place during the month of March to mark the annual celebration. The programme can be viewed on the Equality Commission NI website - www.equalityni.org
