The Northern Ireland Housing Executive has confirmed that a new social housing development is to be progressed on a vacant site in the Rathcoole estate.

A spokesperson for the Housing Executive revealed that the project at Inniscarn Drive is programmed to commence in the 2015/16 financial year.

“A housing association will be nominated to progress the development in the coming months. Ten properties are expected to be built on the site, but this may be subject to change as the site advances through the development process,” she commented.

Welcoming the proposed new-build social housing project, DUP Councillor Thomas Hogg said: “I first highlighted this vacant site with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive back in August 2013 and have been lobbying since then to have the land developed for social housing. Following recent correspondence I am now delighted to have received written confirmation from the Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland MLA that this site is to be included in the three-year Social Housing Development Programme for Rathcoole.

“This site has lain vacant for many years and has attracted problems of fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour. Following this good news the site can now be transformed; removing ugly waste ground and providing much needed social housing for the local area.”

He added: “There remains a considerable unmet social housing need in Rathcoole and other unionist areas of Newtownabbey. The DUP has been to the fore in lobbying for equality of social housing provision for unionist areas and I am now pleased to see progress from the Housing Executive after many years of neglect.”
