Staff from Belfast International Airport have raised £2,400 in memory of firefighter Sloan Gibson’s 34-year-old son, Richard.

Richard, from Knockview Road in Newtownabbey, passed away in the NI Hospice in October after an intense four-year battle with bowel cancer.

Sloan, who works for Blue Watch RFFS (Rescue and Fire Fighting Service), has been overwhelmed by the support of Belfast International Airport and his colleagues.

RFFS raised £1,300 through their participation in “Movember” and a coffee morning.

The air traffic controllers also became involved in fundraising and kindly donated £100. Belfast International Airport has generously donated £1,000 from its charity fund.

Sloan, his wife Ann and Richard’s widow Lisa have been overwhelmed by this recent £2,400 donation, which will be forwarded to the Richard Gibson Tribute Fund, a fund which commemorates his life whilst improving the lives of other local people needing hospice care.

To date, Richard’s family and friends have raised a phenomenal £6,470 for hospice through various fundraising activities such as car boot sales.

Sharon Gorman, donor development officer, said: “Hospice relies heavily on voluntary income especially during this current economic climate where fundraising is becoming increasingly challenging.

“We really appreciate the generosity and support of Belfast International Airport as these funds will enable us to provide the specialist care needed by local hospice patients. “Their kindness has also brought a little sense of comfort to Richard’s devastated wife and family during this tragic time.”
