Planning Service has approved an application from Biffa Waste Services Ltd for the construction and operation of an asbestos disposal facility at the Cottonmount landfill site in Mallusk.

The approval recommendation was passed by the council’s Planning and Consultation Committee on Monday, April 7 without debate.

It’s understood there were four letters of objection to the application.

Richard Gregory, chairman of Mallusk Community Action Group, said the decision to grant planning permission was “sadly no surprise,” but added that “if the facility is managed properly it shouldn’t be a problem.”
