Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership has thanked local volunteers for their invaluable work on a daily basis.

The ‘Golden Awards’ - held in Merville House to celebrate National Volunteers Week 2014 - were attended by around 70 volunteers from a variety of groups throughout Rathcoole.

Paul Dinsmore of Volunteer Now spoke at the event about the importance of volunteering and highlighted how the role of volunteering can take many different forms and can include many different age groups. He encouraged people to spread the word about the rewarding benefits of volunteering and asked them to encourage others to give a little time to groups in their areas.

David McCammond from Citybeat compered the evening and conducted the awards ceremony, which was attended by Mayor Thomas Hogg.

Six individuals received awards for their outstanding volunteer roles within the Rathcoole community. They were: Joyce Campbell, Breakaway Blues - Rathcoole Volunteer of 2014; Mark Johnston, Inniscoole Day Centre - Most Companionable Volunteer; Margaret Farrell, Newtownabbey Women’s Group - Most Obliging Volunteer; Tracey Stewart, CAB - Most Helpful Volunteer; David Magill, Dunanney Centre - Most Supportive Volunteer; Pat Murray, Newtownabbey Women’s Group - Most Entertaining Volunteer.

A number of other volunteers received certificates from Cllr Billy Webb, Chair of Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, in recognition of their work within the local community.

The awards night included activities including Take Your Pick and Rathcoole’s Got Talent competitions, supported by businesses such as Hendersons, John Reavey Solicitors, Thunderdome, Spar Hairology, Tesco, DKNI florists, Maysoon Clinic, The Hair Company and Reflections.
