Discount retail chain Home Bargains has refused to comment on speculation that it is due to open an outlet in Ballyclare later this year.

Ever since a ‘Sold’ sign appeared on the front of the former Woodsides department store at Granges Street, rumours have been circulating the town that Home Bargains has purchased the building.

Woodsides, one of the town’s oldest family businesses, went into administration in October 2011. It closed two months later with the loss of around 30 jobs.

Since then, administrators have been seeking a buyer for the building.

A man contacted the Times this week claiming that Home Bargains is due to open at Granges Street in June. He said that the store will have a cafe and a garden centre.

However, a spokesperson for the company, which has more than 320 stores across the UK, said she couldn’t comment on the rumours.
