Mayor Fraser Agnew recently hosted a conferring ceremony at Mossley Mill for students who successfully completed the Diploma in Community Development Practice.

Ten students completed the diploma programme, which was funded by Newtownabbey Borough Council and delivered by the National University of Ireland, Galway.

The diploma was a one-year part time course designed to enable local community activists to gain a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of community development work and how these can be applied in a local context.

Speaking at the event, Alderman Agnew commented: “On behalf of Newtownabbey Borough Council, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each of the students for their hard work, dedication and commitment in successfully completing this very worthwhile qualification. I hope this will not only be of benefit to you as individuals but also to the communities in which you work.”

Helen Casey, Community Education Officer, National University of Ireland attended the event and spoke about the success of the partnership between the university and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Looking to the future, she said that she was hopeful that the relationship between the two organisations would continue and highlighted opportunities for continued educational development for the students.
