£150k investment to help improve ailing town centre
Brendan Carlin
THERE was some positive news for the Glengormley business community this week as the Town Centre Regeneration Committee moved forward with proposals for a £150,000 investment in the area.
It is understood the DSD-funded ‘revitalisation programme’ will focus on providing a facelift to a section of the town centre - possibly the area around Ferbro Buildings.
The proposals agreed by the Regeneration Committee were due to be discussed at a traders’ meeting in the Thunderdome Cafe on Thursday evening (Jan 26).
Speaking after the Regeneration Committee meeting, Co-Chair Brendan Carlin said: “No final decision can be made until local traders get updated on the proposals. The committee has an obligation to bring these forward at this meeting and we are looking for local traders to attend in numbers so they can be briefed and give it their approval. Following that we will draft the application and have it submitted.
“We are very hopeful that this will bring some positive investment into the town, and not exclusively to Portland Avenue which is not favoured by many traders as the location for the big investment.”
News of the £150k boost for the town comes less than a month after Newtownabbey Borough Council agreed to commit 10 per cent match funding to a £500,000 environmental improvement scheme that could see the replacement of paving and street lighting in the area around Portland Avenue.
