Ballynure bowlers organise charity service

BALLYNURE Methodist Church was the venue on February 28, for a special charity service sponsored by the local bowling club led by its present chairman, Hubert Greer.

The benefiting charity was Headway Ballymena and the special guests were the members of Ballyclare Male Choir under conductor Phyllis Boyd and accompanist, Rosemary Basher.

The service was led by the minister Rev. Tom Stevenson and the special address was given by Rev. Doc John Nelson, minister of Raloo Old Presbyterian Church - himself a keen bowler. Bowling was the theme of his address, comparing the goals and disciplines of the game of bowls to the journey of life.

Gail Workman from the Headway Ballymena branch gave a presentation on the work carried out solely by volunteers and covering the North East of the province.

Gail spoke from her own personal experiences, having to care for her son who suffered a brain injury 18 years ago at the young age of 14.

Brain injury is a condition that changes lives, not only those who suffer the injury, but also their families. Families take most of the strain. The burden of care often places the family under severe pressure. Headway promotes a wider understanding of all aspects of brain injury and provides information, support and social activities for people with brain injury, their families and carers.

Headway Ballymena is a charitable organisation and therefore, depends totally on volunteers to continue helping brain injury survivors and their families.

They continually need volunteers to help with organising activities and fundraising and would welcome help in any way. Further information on Headway can be found on the national website: www.headway.org.uk and Gail can be contacted either by phone at 028 2565 1521 or by email at gail-headway-ballymena@hotmail.com .

The church in Ballynure was filled to capacity and Ballyclare Male Choir's deportment officer Ronnie Lee had a difficult job trying to fit the 47 members of the choir into the very limited space.

Church organist Sheila Greer accompanied the congregational praise, and afterwards at the supper in the church hall she also performed with the choir in a special arrangement of the very reflective piece 'Perfect Day'.

The entire offering at the service was donated to the Headway Ballymena charity and a perfect evening was brought to a close with the bowling club treasurer, Moyra McGookin presenting Gail Workman with a cheque for 600.

The Ballyclare Male Choir meanwhile, continues its busy schedule of engagements with a visit next Sunday to Ballinderry Parish Church and the following Sunday to Terrace Row Presbyterian Church in Coleraine, and with many more engagements to follow before the season ends in May.
