GLOBAL aerospace company Bombardier has signed an agreement to purchase the former Nortel facility near Monkstown, the Times can reveal. Bombardier snaps up Nortel factory site
It is expected that more than 600 employees will be relocated to the Doagh Road site in the coming months - most from Bombardier’s existing base at Queen’s Island in Belfast, and others from its Newtownabbey composites factory on Church Road.
While the move is unlikely to create any new jobs at present, a spokesperson for the company stressed that it will allow room for future business expansion.
More than 90 people lost their jobs at Nortel’s Doagh Road plant when the telecoms firm went into administration in January 2009.
A spokesperson for the administrators, Ernst & Young, said they couldn’t comment on the possible sale of the facility to Bombardier. However, the Times understands that other businesses which had been operating at the site moved out before Christmas due to the pending deal, which could be finalised within a matter of weeks.
A Bombardier spokesperson said the purchase, for an undisclosed fee thought to be over £5million, will include a total area of 430,000 sq/ft and include the existing factory, offices and support services.
