FORMER Irish League footballer and teacher Bryan Scroggie has been ordained as the new Youth Pastor at the Newtownabbey People’s Church in Mallusk.
The 46-year-old has been involved with the church since it opened three years ago and has given up his job as a teacher at Fairview Primary School to concentrate on his new pastoral role.
Bryan was ordained at a service in the church on Sunday, July 1.
He told the Times: “It will be really different to the teaching that I am used to, but I am looking forward to it.
“I have been involved with football coaching at the church and outreach programmes for the youth, from newborn right the way up to the age of 30.

“We have around 350 kids involved with the church, so it is very strong and always growing.
“I will be continuing that work and also working to show the kids in the area that they don’t have to be involved in sectarian incidents, or drink and drugs and there are other options for them.
“As it is a pastoral position I will also be helping out the kids, if they get sick or are having trouble at home and they just need someone to talk to.
“I love telling kids about Jesus and the word of God and the difference the church can make - I am really looking forward to this new chapter in my life.”
Bryan (also pictured inset) is married to Melanie and the couple have two children. He was formerly a centre forward and had spells with Portadown, Glenavon and Ards.
