Bus driver David steers his way to awards success

LOCAL Translink Metro bus driver, David Spratt was named ‘Bus Driver of the Year’ at the recent Federation of Passenger Transport, Northern Ireland (FPTNI) Annual Awards.

FPTNI is the trade body promoting the use of public transport and represents the leading bus and coach operators across Northern Ireland.

Judges highlighted David’s commitment to the job, having worked for the company for over 28 years and setting a remarkable standard.

The 52-year-old Carnmoney man, who says he enjoys meeting different people and his regular passengers on a daily basis, described winning the ‘Bus Driver of the Year’ title as “an absolute honour” and “very humbling”.

Gerry Mullan, Translink’s Service Delivery Manager for Newtownabbey, nominated David for the award.

“I must congratulate David on this great achievement. He has excellent customer care skills and passengers are continually asking about him and how he is a pleasure to travel with. He is a perfect ambassador for Metro, with many great attributes, making him a worthy recipient of this award,” he commented.

This was the second consecutive year that the award has been won by a Newtownabbey driver following the success of Ulsterbus employee Paula McAllister in 2012.

Overall, Translink collected two awards on the night - The Danny Monaghan Raising Standards Award for its Eco Driving Scheme, and the Serving the Community Award for its Youth Forum and the yLink Travel Card.

“These awards celebrate the passenger transport industry and recognise and reward the hard work, commitment and devotion of the men and women who make up the public transport industry.

“FPTNI members still do their absolute best for passengers and will continue to deliver and rise to the challenges across the industry in 2013,” said Karen Magill, Chief Executive of FPTNI.
