Nortel Athletic and Social Club Honorary Secretary, Jim Shaw

IT’S business as usual at Nortel Athletic and Social Club, despite the pending sale of the Doagh Road property to aerospace firm Bombardier.

That was the message this week from the club’s Honorary Secretary, Jim Shaw, who declined to comment on what the future might hold for the popular venue and the sports teams who play at the Factory Grounds.

Last week the Times revealed how Bombardier has agreed to acquire the disused Nortel plant and adjoining social club and sports pitches for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £5million.

The club, which had “a gentleman’s agreement” with Nortel over the use of the facilities was left in a precarious position after the Canadian-owned telecoms firm went into administration in January 2009. And a few months later, administrators Ernst and Young confirmed that they were looking to dispose of the facility, including the seven-acre site encompassing the football pitches, bowling green and social club.

Mr Shaw said the only statement he could make at this time is that “it is business as usual for the Athletic and Social Club.”
