A 92-YEAR-OLD great grandmother from Newtownabbey has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2012 New Year Honours list.

Mrs Robina Parkes has received the much deserved recognition for her ‘Services to the Community’.

Mrs Parkes who lives in sheltered housing at Rathmore Manor on the Knockview Road has for the past 70 years utilised her renowned skills in home baking, jam making and crochet to do what she can for members of the local community.

A long serving member of the congregation at Whitehouse Presbyterian, Mrs Parkes has helped cater for numerous church events in that time, as well as regularly baking scones for the Christian Disabled group that is linked with Abbots Cross Congregational Church on the Doagh Road.

Furthermore, she has sold her baked goods, jams and crochet items to raise literally thousands of pounds to aid the Northern Ireland Hospice and the Children’s Hospice.

The widowed mother of four began her charitable work for the Northern Ireland Hospice not long after it first opened.

“My own wee daughter was 20 when she died from cancer. I nursed her at home for seven weeks before she passed away because at the time there was no hospice care available here,” Mrs Parkes told the Times.
