Council campaign aims to get more people to shop local
THE council is launching a new initiative aimed at encouraging the borough’s residents to think local first when they go shopping.
The campaign ‘Spend Local, Save Local’ will offer Newtownabbey businesses the opportunity to advertise their offers to local residents on a special council-run webpage.
Council officials say that people who support the campaign will be able to save themselves money, and help safeguard town centre vitality.
“The current economic climate, combined with the growth of online shopping and popularity of out of town shopping, has resulted locally in a spate of shop closures, particularly in the town centres of Ballyclare and Glengormley,” a council spokesperson commented.
“Revitalisation schemes are under way in both town centres, funded by the Department for Social Development, and it is hoped that these projects will enhance the appearance of shop fronts and derelict sites in the town centres which will make them more appealing for visitors.”
The council is urging any local business owners that want to get involved with ‘Spend Local, Save Local’ to contact Lisa O’Kane with details of discounts, bonuses or loyalty deals they would like to see included on the campaign webpage.
A marketing and advertising campaign to promote the initiative is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
