Council to invest £10,000 to reduce ‘range anxiety’

THE council is to invest £10,000 towards the cost of installing two power pumps for electric cars in the borough.
Electric charging posts will be installed in various locations around Northern Ireland to encourage more people to buy electric cars.
In order to reduce “range anxiety” - that is, a fear that the car will run out of power with no means of recharging - the government is building an infrastructure of charging points.
Newtownabbey Borough Council was asked to provide some of the cost of installing two posts in the borough by the Ecar Project, a government funded initiative which is working to building a network of electric charging points across the country.
At a recent meeting of the council’s Environment Committee, councillors approved a spend of £10,000 towards the cost of installing the power points in the borough.
Alderman Paul Girvan said: “This is a step forward. Once the infrastructure is in place then people will start buying the cars.”
