Councillors more than a Lidl concerned over junction plan
Supermarket chain Lidl us seeking planning permission for an access onto Church Road to serve the car park at its Glenmount Road store.
LOCAL councillors are to meet with Roads Service to discuss concerns over plans to create a new junction on the busy Church Road - just yards from the entrance to Abbey Retail Park.
At their monthly Planning and Consultation Committee meeting, members hit out at a recommendation by Planning Service to approve an application from retail chain Lidl for the provision of “an additional access onto Church Road to serve the existing supermarket car park.”
Several members, including Billy Webb, John Blair, Thomas Hogg and Lynn Frazer, voiced concerns about the approval recommendation and warned that another access point so close to the notorious Abbey Retail Park junction could add to existing traffic problems in the area.
Reassurances were given by planning officer John Davison that Roads Service has considered the application and raised no objections. Indeed, the meeting was informed that creating the new access point from the Lidl car park, near the entrance to the Glenmount residential development, “could solve a problem in the area.”
“It’s crazy down there at the minute, so I don’t know if this will add to the congestion or solve a problem,” Mayor Victor Robinson commented.
Members voted to hold an office meeting with Roads Service officials to discuss their concerns.
